After hearing about the assignment, one film immediately came to mind. This would be The Social Network, not to be confused with the Social Dilemna, this movie is about the inception of Facebook. I think this movie is appropriate for several reasons. First, we talk about Facebook a lot in this class. Many topics we talk about relate back to Facebook due to the nature of how much power they have over tech and social media. I think it would be interesting to study how Zuckerburg first created the social media website and compare it to what it has become. The movie kind of has two aspects to it. The first is about the true creation of Facebook and the tech side behind it. The second part, and the part that maybe may be a little irrelevant, is about the legal battle between Zuckerberg and the Winklevoss twins.
I think of the themes we learned in class, digital self relates most to the movie. Ever since the inception of Facebook, people had their profiles put out there publicly. I believe in the early stages of Facebook they had no intention of using personal data for profit, and instead saw it solely as a place for advertisers, but as time went on they saw the potential in selling private data and that has kind of what Facebook has evolved to as of now. The movie also relates a little bit to digital creator. A big part of the plot in this movie is the legal battle between Zuckerberg and the Winklevoss twins. Zuckerberg basically took an idea of theirs but then tweaked it a little bit, making Facebook. In digital self we discuss intellectual property and different forms of rights when it comes to information. Studying their legal battle and asking students which side they think is right would be an interesting conversation about digital creator.
For a class assignment, I would simply assign Padlet questions and then have a class discussion regarding the movie. I think the movie covers many topics and allowing the students to interpret the movie the way they want will lead to a very interesting discussion. The movie The Social Network is similar to many of our content from the class but I think that this movie is incredibly close to The Circle. The movies are alike in the sense that they both cover the upbringing of massive tech and social media empires. In both companies you have its charismatic leaders but also dispute within the the top of the companies. Its kind of funny the similarities. Between Facebook and The Circle. The one that comes to mind is how both companies encourage a thriving and lively workspace. Facebook was one fo the first companies to kind of practice the laid back and fun work space in the tech world and many companies have followed. The Circle has something similar with a very fun workspace with the concerts and etc. A second similarity I see is how the employees at The Circle were scored and I think that is comparable to maybe the friends system on Facebook.
